Time Period: 1820-1900

(historians disagree on these dates, some have a starting point of 1830, some 1815)

Forms of Music in the Romantic Period

Program music- Music that tells a story and conveys a particular scene through music.

Nocturne- A piece usually with lyrical melody over arpeggios that is inspired by the night.

Nationalist/national identity- Pieces about the composer’s country or homeland. May feature folk music from a particular country.

Rhapsody- A one movement work with no particular form, consisting of many different moods throughout the piece.
